LUTON GEARS UP FOR ITS 10TH ANNUAL BIG IFTAR CELEBRATION

People of all faiths and backgrounds are invited to attend The Big Iftar on Friday 22 March in St George’s Square, Luton.
The event takes place during the month of Ramadan in which Muslims in Luton and around the world fast from dawn to sunset.
In addition to the communal sunset meal (iftar), the evening will include keynote speeches and awards celebrating local individuals and organisations making a positive difference in the community.
Last year's honorees included retired headteacher Daniel Connor, Luton Foodbank's chair Liz Stringer and community volunteer Dave Crean, who were recognised for their outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Young people from around Luton are involved in The Big Iftar through the ‘Luton is Home’ photography competition.
Inspire FM and its partners are set to host the annual community get-together as part of the town-wide ‘Let’s Eat Together’ initiative which will see schools and community groups hosting iftar events.
Event organiser, Mohammed Tariq, said: “The Big Iftar is a celebration of Luton’s diversity, unity and community spirit.
“It's an opportunity for friends from all backgrounds to come together to share food and good conversations.”
Donations from the event will be dedicated to tackling holiday hunger in the town through Luton Foodbank.
Salma Khan, Project Manager at Luton Foodbank said: “More and more families are struggling to afford basic food and are skipping meals.
“We're delighted to team up with The Big Iftar once again with proceeds going towards providing nutritious meals to children during the school holidays.”
The Big Iftar is run in partnership with Luton Council, Bedfordshire Police, and with support from Luton Rising.
