Luton charity Friends of Bright Eyes (FOBE) took part in the annual Al Noor Dragon Boat Race earlier this month to raise fund for an accessible minibus.
Two teams represented the charity which provides respite and care for children with disabilities.
Participants raised over £28,000 for a new accessible minibus to transport children at FOBE.
Mohammed Tariq, Manager of FOBE, said: “We all had a great time and enjoyed participating in the boat race with other charities and organisations.
“We know there are masses out there caring for their loved ones without any support.
“We took part in this race to allow families to take a break and have some time for themselves.”
The charity was set up in 1993 by a young mother, Yasmin Yousaf who found herself stuck when trying to access support services for her child with a disability in Luton.
“I married into the Asian community and my husband had a daughter who was disabled and very poorly.
“We brought her here and when she got here, she needed a lot of care. But when I was walking around with her in a wheelchair, I didn’t see any other children” says Yasmin in an Urban Kube episode on Inspire FM.
The yearly boat race, established by the Al Noor Foundation in 2018, took place at Fairlop Waters Country Park, London.
60 teams from schools, faith groups, charities, and corporate organisations competed in the competition to raise funds and awareness of charitable projects.
