As Muslims, our faith places immense importance on being good neighbours. Let's explore this essential aspect of Islamic teachings and discover the pearls of wisdom found in the Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Quranic Guidance:
The Quran emphasizes the significance of treating neighbours with kindness and compassion. In Surah Al-Nisa (4:36), Allah says, "Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbour, the neighbour farther away, the companion at your side..." This verse beautifully places the neighbour on par with other significant relationships, highlighting the value of proximity in fostering care.
Prophetic Wisdom:
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exemplified the teachings of the Quran in his actions and words. His sayings reflect the essence of being a good neighbour. He stated, "Jibril kept recommending treating neighbours with kindness until I thought he would assign them a share of inheritance" (Muslim). This gentle reminder underscores the gravity of our duty towards our neighbours, implying that their rights upon us are profound.
Practical Acts of Good Neighbours:
1. The Greeting of Peace (Salaam):
Begin with the simple yet profound act of greeting your neighbours with peace. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, the best people to Allah are those who are first to greet with peace" (Abu Dawud). When you see each other on the street, greet your neighbours with kindness.
2. Helping in Times of Need:
In times of joy and hardship, be there for your neighbours. The Quran encourages acts of kindness, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbour to his side goes hungry" (Al-Albani). Share meals, check in during difficult times, and offer assistance when needed.
3. Respecting Boundaries:
Respect for privacy is a virtue. The Prophet ﷺ advised, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbour" (Al-Bukhari). Avoid actions that may cause inconvenience or distress, ensuring a harmonious coexistence.
4. Forgiveness and Patience:
Differences may arise, but Islam teaches forgiveness and patience. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should either speak good or remain silent." Choose words wisely, and if misunderstandings occur, approach with a spirit of reconciliation.
