NEWS RELEASE: BRITISH MUSLIMS TAKE THEIR CELEBRATION TO DOWNING STREET IN THE FORM OF A FLOWER BOUQUET

Posted on: 07 January 2016

Muslims across the globe are partaking in religious festivities to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him). Young British Muslims have co-ordinated their celebrations in a unique style by coming out to local city centres and presenting their community with sweet treats, red roses and a beautiful message. They hope their abundance of smiles and a beautiful message spreading love and happiness to all will decimate the negative perceptions .

Dawood Masood said ‘On 19th December 2015, we had events in Luton, Birmingham and other cities, where volunteers came out to the streets to celebrate and engage with their community to show the true message of Islam’. He further added that ‘the response has been overwhelming, and now we would like to take these celebrations to the leader of our country, to the Rt Hon David Cameron, to 10 Downing Street’.

On Saturday 9th January 2016 at 12:00pm, Mawlid in the City will culminate celebrations with sweets and roses being distributed at Richmond Terrace and with a Bouquet of Flowers being presented at Downing Street for the Prime Minister.

As-Siraat is the organisation behind this initiative, which started these coordinated worldwide events in 2012.

Dawood Masood is a volunteer and lead organiser of 'Mawlid in the City' in Luton.

‘Mawlid in the City’ which is an internationally co-ordinated campaign has set out to spread the simple yet heart-warming concept by engaging with communities, promoting dialogue, spreading peace and mutual understanding. Mawlid, an Arabic word, which literally means Birth and in this context is translated as Birth Celebrations in the City.
